Custom Pins FAQs

Product Details

What materials are used to make the pins?

We use different base metals depending on the pin style, including brass, iron, stainless steel, and zinc alloy, selected for the best balance of durability, appearance, and feel in hand.

For instance, antiqued pins are best made die struck with custom dies in brass, while 3D pins are best made with die casting using molds, and zinc alloy.

What platings and finishes are available?

The final appearance of your pin’s metal areas is determined by two factors: the metal plating and finish (the treatment or texture).

Plating options include:

  • Brass
  • Copper
  • Nickel
  • Black nickel
  • Genuine gold

Finishes include:

  • Antiqued – darkens recessed areas to highlight contours and details
  • Matte/Polished – raised areas are polished while recessed areas are matte, creating elegant contrast
  • All Polished – typically used with enameled pins where the color provides the main detail and the metal serves as a bright, clean background and border

What sizes are available?

Most pins fall between 0.75" and 1.5" in size, with 1" to 1.25" typically being the typical sweet spot.

Larger sizes are possible and occasionally used for statement pieces, and we can create a pin in almost any size. but our standard pricing is focused on traditional lapel pin sizing.

What shapes can you make?

We can produce virtually any pin shape, and designs with internal cutouts are also possible.

What type of enamel fills are available?

We offer both soft and hard enamel. Both are Pantone®-matched and durable, but they create different looks:

  • Soft enamel sits recessed below the raised metal, creating a tactile, dimensional feel.
  • Hard enamel is filled level with the surrounding metal for a smooth, polished surface and a cleaner, more contemporary look.

An epoxy coating is sometimes used to protect soft enamel — particularly for full-color and raised-metal pins — but is not used on hard enamel.

Can you match my brand colors?

Yes, we can Pantone®-match enamel colors for logo branding and / or design requirements.

What backings are available?

We offer multiple pin attachment styles to suit your needs:

  • Butterfly/military clutch (standard)
  • Deluxe locking clutch
  • Rubber back (softer attachment)
  • Magnetic back (no holes in clothes)

How are the pins packaged?

Pins are individually bagged for protection during shipping. For presentation, we offer optional:

  • Velveteen drawstring bags
  • Velvet jewelry boxes
  • Full-color presentation/backer cards

Customization & Artwork

Can I personalize pins with different numbers or text?

While sequential numbering isn’t common for pins, we often engrave short text such as "1 Year", "5 Years", or similar milestones within an order.

This is often used for years of service or recognition programs where the same pin design is used, with only the number changing via engraving, thereby eliminating the need for a separate die for each milestone or change.

Can you help with my design?

Definitely! Whether you have production-ready artwork, a sketch, or just an idea, our design team will refine your design for production. Use the Free Preview & Quote form on any product page to send your artwork or ideas — we’ll create a digital proof for your approval before production begins.

How do I send you my logo or artwork?

You can upload your artwork during checkout.

Prefer to see a proof first? Click the “Free Preview & Quote” button on the product page, attach your artwork, note your quantity, and our art team will send you a proof for approval.

What kind of artwork do you need?

Vector files (AI, EPS, or PDF) are preferred for the best results. A high-resolution JPEG often works too — just send what you have, and our art team will advise.

Can I see a proof before ordering?

Yes. We’re happy to provide a free digital proof and quote before you order. Click the “Free Preview & Quote” button on the product page to upload artwork (if you have it) or simply add your text and comments.

We’ll reply within one business day—usually the same day.

Can I order fewer than the minimum quantity?
