Customize the Look and Feel of Your Coin with Distinctive Finishing Touches
-
Customizing your coin with a special border / edge treatment is a very attractive way to further add uniqueness and character to your coins.
Most coins use a classic, smooth border — a timeless and elegant choice — but there are many options beyond that to help your design stand out.
A well-designed border should feel intentional and balanced. It should be wide enough relative to the coin’s overall diameter to frame your artwork cleanly and give the coin substance. It’s a subtle detail, but it makes a big difference: all other things being equal, a coin with a more substantial border will look and feel thicker, better made, and more valuable than one with a too-thin rim.
Specialty borders (like scalloped or diamond-cut) are engraved into the coin’s front and back surfaces, surrounding your central artwork. Edge treatments (like reeding) are cut directly into the edge — the side of the coin — and are usually only visible from the side view or when the coin is handled.
Quality also depends on the finish work. For example, a diamond-cut border should feel crisp and precise, not overly sharp or rough. Done right, these design elements make your coin not just look great — but feel impressive too.
Available Borders and Edge Treatments:
- Scalloped Border
- Chiseled Border
- Petal Border
- Diamond Border
- Spiral Border
- Reeded Edge (Coin Edge)
Traditionally used on currency like U.S. quarters and dimes, the reeded (or coined) edge features tightly spaced vertical grooves. Originally designed to discourage coin clipping and counterfeiting, today it adds a classic, authentic feel to your custom coin.
