Antiqued or Polished? Choosing the Right Finish

See how the same artwork changes in contrast, depth, and reflectivity depending on the plating.

  • When designing a custom metal piece — whether a coin, keychain, lapel pin, medal, or buckle — the finish plays a major role in how your artwork is experienced. The same design can feel traditional and dimensional in an antiqued finish, or bold and reflective in polished metal.

There isn’t a universal “right” answer. The best choice depends on your artwork, your intended use, and the visual impact you want to create.

When Antiqued Is a Strong Choice

Antiqued finishes are especially effective for detailed artwork, traditional designs, or pieces where depth and sculpting are central to the look. The darkened recessed areas naturally enhance separation and make fine elements stand out.

They’re often chosen for commemorative coins, heritage-style keychains, and dimensional lapel pins where texture and character matter.

    When Polished Creates Impact

Polished finishes offer a bright, modern presence. They reflect light and draw attention, making them ideal for bold logos, minimal designs, and high-visibility pieces.
When paired with matte backgrounds or subtle texture in recessed areas, polished metal can achieve both brilliance and clarity.

A Note on Contrast and Readability

Polished finishes create a bright, mirror-like surface that many customers love. But when every surface is highly reflective, small details and lettering can sometimes appear more subtle depending on lighting and viewing angle.

For that reason, many polished designs incorporate matte or lightly textured recessed areas. A matte background behind polished raised elements improves clarity while maintaining a clean, refined look.
In more intricate designs — especially those with fine line work or sculpted depth — contrast becomes even more important. Antiqued finishes naturally create that separation by darkening recessed areas and highlighting raised detail.

Neither approach is better. They simply produce different visual effects.

Our team reviews every proof with these considerations in mind and will recommend adjustments if additional contrast would improve readability or overall balance.
