A 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO is heading to auction this week, carrying an asking price of $56.8 million.
If it achieves that figure, it will become the most expensive car ever sold. The auction is being handled by the classic Ferrari specialists at Talacrest.
What Makes This Car So Special
According to Car and Driver, the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO designed by Scaglietti remains one of the most collectible and valuable cars ever made.
This particular car—chassis number 3387GT—was the second off the production line and the first ever to enter a race. Only 39 were produced between 1962 and 1964. Its first race was the 1962 Sebring 12 Hours, where Phil Hill and Olivier Gendebien finished 2nd overall and 1st in class. Later that year, it raced in the 30th Annual Le Mans, driven by Bob Grossman and George Roberts Jr., placing 6th overall and 3rd in class.
There are a lot of expensive cars out there—some new, some vintage—but few match the historical significance of this one.
Over the next few years, this Ferrari competed in numerous races before being sold in 1968 to Dayton, Ohio resident Bernard Stayman for the then-whopping sum of $2,500. Beyond its rarity, the 250 GTO is revered for its design and engineering, ranking first on Motor Trend Classic’s “Greatest Ferraris of All Time. Over the decades, this car has traded hands and appeared in countless exhibitions. While it’s received some restoration work—its original red with white-and-blue stripe now replaced with NART blue metallic with white stripe—its legacy remains untarnished.

The Most Expensive Car to Sell Before
If this 250 GTO breaks the record, it will surpass another 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO. At the Bonhams Quail Lodge Auction in 2014, chassis number 3851GT sold for a record-setting $38.1 million as part of the Maranello Rosso Collection—ten collectible Ferraris that together fetched nearly $66 million.

Why It Matters to Us
Everyone admires a beautifully engineered sports car, especially one that continues to captivate generations. Our connection to this story came through the Maranello Rosso Collection auction with Bonhams in 2014.
We were honored to create a custom leather keychain to commemorate the event.
It began with our Genuine Leather Custom Key Fob—a refined choice fitting for an occasion of that caliber. The finished piece featured black leather paired with a chrome-and-red enamel medallion depicting the Ferrari 250 GTO profile. The result was a striking blend of materials that mirrored the car’s own timeless aesthetic.
It was a privilege to contribute in our own small way to a celebration of automotive history—and to see another legendary 250 GTO take its place among the world’s most admired cars.
